The Death of a Friend-Ed Blake
My walk over to the Post Office included a tap
on the window or a wave to Ed Blake. Stopping
by occasionally for a conversation that would bring
us around to our favorite topic--Downtown--and all
the possibilities. Ed has been at that same
window for many years, working on projects that
would take him around the world. I
don't think we can yet grasp the tremendous loss we
have suffered in our community and beyond.
Ed held leadership positions with HHDA over
the years, he helped draft Design Guidelines,
assisted with the design of Town Square Park and so
much more. His creativity can be enjoyed with
a walk or bike ride along Longleaf Trace. Lake
Terrace Convention Center gets it's name from the
wonderful lake and grounds he designed. The
great new landscape along Pine Street at
BancorpSouth is his handiwork. As a landscape
architect, he was genius!
His latest local endeavor includes the Gordon's
Creek Project. For the last year, HHDA has
been working on developing a plan for Gordon's Creek
from Hattiesburg's Zoo at Kamper Park eastward to
the river and Chain Park. Ed has been along
every step of the way--quite literally. Last
August our committee hiked along the river and creek
bed to the Depot. Ed snapped photos all along
the way, telling the importance of preserving the
natural habitat, describing the area in wonderful
detail. What a genuine love of this project he
has shown.
HHDA is determined that this project will move
forward as part of his Legacy of Leadership to our
organization and community. On behalf of HHDA,
I extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Marilyn,
and their family for their loss. We will
celebrate his memory and enjoy the fruits of his
labor for many years to come.
